Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

WHAT IS A UTI?

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection that can affect any part of your urinary system, including the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. Most UTIs occur in the lower tract (the bladder and urethra), and women are more likely than men to experience them. Common UTI symptoms include a burning feeling when urinating, a strong urge to urinate that doesn’t go away and urinating often. It may also cause pain in the pelvis.17

TYPES OF URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS

Different types of UTIs can cause different UTI symptoms, depending on where the infection is in your urinary tract17:

Location of the infection Signs and symptoms
Kidneys
  • Back or side pain
  • High fever
  • Shaking and chills
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
Bladder
  • Pelvic pressure
  • Lower belly discomfort
  • Frequent, painful urination
  • Blood in urine
Urethra
  • Burning with urination
  • Discharge

CAUSES OF UTIS

UTI causes are usually linked to bacteria entering the urinary tract through the urethra. Normally, the body keeps bacteria out, but sometimes they break through and cause an infection. Most UTIs affect women as women have a shorter urethra than men, so bacteria can travel more easily and cause infection.17

UTI Treatment

To ease UTI discomfort, many people use Citro-Soda® for UTI symptom relief as it has urinary alkalinising properties which can reduce the burning sensation that often accompanies UTIs.1,15

Lifestyle choices that can help lower the risk of getting UTIs include drinking plenty of fluids, especially water, to flush out any bacteria in the bladder. You could also try cranberry products for added support, and eliminate feminine products that can irritate the urethra.17

If you’re looking for over-the-counter relief from UTI symptoms, use Citro-Soda®. But if your symptoms persist or get worse, speak to a healthcare provider for further advice.
